Beaches near Patchogue, and the rules that catch people out

There is water on three sides of this house and only one place nearby you can actually swim in it. That surprises people every summer, so here is the honest order, what each one costs, and what we have not been able to confirm.

Corey Beach, the one you can swim at

Corey Beach at 1 Corey Avenue in Blue Point is the nearest place to swim in the Great South Bay. It is barely a mile from the house in a straight line, but the road goes inland around the water, so it is about a nine minute drive rather than a walk.

Lifeguards are on from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day. Outside those dates the beach is still there and a cold walk along it is one of the better things to do in February, but nobody is watching the water.

You do not need a resident permit to park there. That is the thing most visitors get wrong, and it is worth saying plainly because it changes the day. Non residents pay at the pay station, checked against the Town of Brookhaven's own parking page on 19 October 2026:

  • By the hour: $4.00 Monday to Thursday, $5.00 Friday to Sunday and on holidays.
  • By the day: $20.00 Monday to Thursday, $25.00 Friday to Sunday and on holidays.
  • The seasonal non resident permit is $358 per vehicle, which only earns its money back over roughly a fortnight of beach days. For a week's stay, pay at the station.
  • The pay station runs 8:00 AM to 10:00 PM, and night fishing between 5:00 PM and 6:00 AM needs its own permit.

No dogs at Corey Beach in any month, service animals aside. That is the town's rule and it is enforced year round, which catches out people who assume the nearest beach is the dog beach. The rest of it is on bringing a dog to Patchogue.

The Beach Club, five minutes away, and the catch

The Patchogue Beach Club is 0.21 miles from the front door, a four or five minute walk, and it has a pool, a splash pad and a stretch of sand.

You are not allowed in the water there. The pool is the pool and the sand is for sitting on. People walk down with towels and a plan and find that out at the gate, so it is the single most useful thing on this page.

It is summer only. The 2026 season ran from 29 June to 1 September. Next season's dates are not published yet, and there is a fee we have not re-checked this year, so confirm both before you walk down rather than taking a figure off a page written months earlier.

Shorefront Park, which is not a swimming beach

The nearest water is the closest thing to a trap here. Shorefront Park runs along the bay right next to the house, with a pier and a kayak launch, and it is where people end up at sunset. It is a park on the water rather than a beach you swim from. Get in a kayak, walk the pier, watch the sun go down. For swimming, drive to Corey.

The ocean, half a mile and a boat away

For actual surf you want Fire Island. The Davis Park ferry terminal is 0.44 miles from the door, so it needs no car, and the crossing puts you on the ocean beach. There is no scheduled service from December through March. Times and the parts people get caught by are on catching the Davis Park ferry.

Dogs get a better deal out there than they do at Corey. The National Park Service keeps them off the ocean beach from 15 March through Labor Day, which read the other way means a leashed dog can walk it from the day after Labor Day until the middle of March.

The county beaches, and what we will not tell you

Suffolk County runs the bigger ocean beaches further east, Smith Point and Cupsogue among them, and they work on the county's own Green Key system rather than town parking. We went looking for the current non resident rules on 19 October 2026 and found three sources that disagreed with each other, none of them current. Rather than print a price that turns out to be wrong at the gate, ask Suffolk County Parks directly. We would rather be short an answer than give you a bad one.

The short version

  • Swimming in the bay: Corey Beach, nine minutes, pay at the station.
  • Pool and sand, no swimming: the Beach Club, five minutes on foot.
  • Sunset and kayaks, no swimming: Shorefront Park, next door.
  • Ocean: Fire Island, by ferry from half a mile away.
  • Dogs: not at Corey ever, Fire Island ocean beach in the winter half of the year.
