Accessibility

We want anyone to be able to read about the house and get in touch, including people using a screen reader, a keyboard on its own, magnification, or high contrast settings. This page says where the site stands, including the parts that fall short.

What we aim for

The target is WCAG 2.2 Level AA. As of the date above, automated testing across every page of the site finds no Level AA violations. Automated tools miss a lot of real problems, so a clean result is the minimum. It doesn't prove the site works for everyone.

How we test

• axe-core, checking every page against WCAG 2.2 Level AA
• Lighthouse, on a simulated mobile connection
• Keyboard only, with no mouse, including the skip link
• With JavaScript switched off, because the whole site is built to work without it
• Colour contrast measured against every background it sits on
• Every page in all twelve languages at 320 pixels wide, checking that nothing forces the page to scroll sideways
• With high contrast mode, reduced transparency, and reduced motion switched on

What doesn't conform yet

• The translations are machine made. We wrote the English pages. The other eleven languages were translated automatically and haven't been checked by a native speaker, so some of the wording will be off. Every translated page says so and links back to the English.
• Only the homepage is translated. The longer guides are English only, so the language switcher takes you to the homepage in your language.
• The short film has no captions. It runs nine minutes, has spoken dialogue, and is published at our-story/coasting with no captions or transcript. That fails WCAG 2.2 success criterion 1.2.2 at Level A, and it's the most serious gap on this list, because it shuts out anyone who is deaf or hard of hearing. If you want to know what happens in it, email us and we'll tell you. Captions are the next accessibility job on this site.
• Nobody independent has audited the site, and we haven't tested it with people who use assistive technology every day. We're two people running a rental, and we'd rather say so.
• There's no dark theme. If you use a high contrast mode in your operating system, the site respects it, along with reduced transparency and reduced motion settings. We just haven't built a separate dark colour scheme.
• The video at the top of the homepage is decorative and silent, and everything in it is also in the photograph behind it or in the text. If you've asked your device to reduce motion, you get the still photograph instead.

About the house

This page is about the website. The house is a small single storey ranch, about 600 square feet, with one bathroom. We haven't had it assessed for accessibility, and we won't guess at doorway widths or thresholds in writing.
