Accessibility

We want anyone to be able to read about the house and get in touch, including people using a screen reader, a keyboard on its own, magnification, or high contrast settings. This page says where the site currently stands, including the parts that fall short.

What we aim for

The target is WCAG 2.2 Level AA. As of the date above, automated testing across every page of the site finds no Level AA violations. Automated tools catch perhaps a third of real problems, so that is a floor rather than a guarantee.

How we test

• axe-core, checking every page against WCAG 2.2 Level AA
• Lighthouse, on a simulated mobile connection
• Keyboard only, with no mouse, including the skip link
• With JavaScript switched off, because the whole site is built to work without it
• Colour contrast measured against every background it sits on
• Every page in all twelve languages at 320 pixels wide, checking that nothing forces the page to scroll sideways
• With high contrast mode, reduced transparency, and reduced motion switched on

What does not conform yet

Being specific here rather than vague:

• Translations are machine made. The English pages are the ones we wrote. The other eleven languages were translated automatically and have not been checked by a native speaker, so some wording will be imperfect. Every translated page says so and links back to the English.
• Only the homepage is translated. The longer guides are English only. The language switcher takes you to the homepage in your language, because there is no translated version of those pages to send you to.
• No independent audit. Nobody outside has reviewed this site, and we have not tested it with people who use assistive technology daily. We are a two person operation, and we would rather say that than imply a review that never happened.
• No dark theme. If you use a high contrast mode at the operating system level, the site respects it, and it also responds to reduced transparency and reduced motion. There is no separate dark colour scheme, which is a design choice rather than an accessibility one.
• The hero video. It is decorative, silent, and carries no information that is not also in the photograph behind it or in the text. If you have asked your device to reduce motion, it is not shown at all and you get the still photograph instead.

If any part of this site is hard to use, please tell us. It is the fastest way for us to find what testing missed, and a real person reads every message.

About the house

This page is about the website. The house itself is a small single storey ranch, about 600 square feet, with one bathroom. We have not had it assessed for accessibility and we are not going to guess at doorway widths or thresholds in writing.

If access matters for your stay, email or call us before you book and tell us what you need to know. We will go and measure it, take photographs of the specific thing you are asking about, and tell you honestly whether the house works for you. We would much rather do that than have you arrive and find out it does not.
