Patchogue from November to March

What closes

If your plan depends on one of these, change the plan or change the dates.

• The Fire Island ferry stops. I called the Davis Park Ferry on 9 September 2026 to check, and there's no scheduled service at all from December through March. They'll run a water taxi on request instead, so you can still get across in winter, but you book it ahead rather than turning up for a boat. Their number is (631) 475-1665 , and the terminal is half a mile from the house.
• The Patchogue Beach Club is closed. Its 2026 season ran from June 29 to September 1, and the pool, the sand and the splash pad are summer only.
• Corey Beach has no lifeguards. They're on duty from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day, which the town confirmed on its own page on October 5, 2026. Dogs are not allowed there at any time of year, service dogs aside. The beach is still there, and a cold walk along it is one of the better things to do in February, but nobody's watching the water, so stay out of it.
• The Shorefront Band Shell goes quiet. The concerts you can hear from our patio stop for the season. In winter the view from the patio is just the bay, and we like it that way.
• Outdoor dining packs up. A few Main Street places are known for their patios and rooftops. The kitchens stay open, but you'll be eating inside.

What stays open

More than you'd expect. Patchogue is a village people live in all year (just over 12,400 of them), and they don't leave in October.

• The Patchogue Theatre runs all winter. November 2026 has six shows on its calendar, including a Last Waltz celebration on the 7th and Blue Oyster Cult on the 27th, and December has comedy and a holiday show. It opened in 1923, seats 1,106, and is about a mile from the house. The box office is open Wednesday to Sunday, noon to 6.
• Main Street stays busy. The restaurants don't close for the winter, and on a Friday in January you'll still hear live music coming out of a few doorways.
• The parks stay open. Shorefront Park is next door and Rider Park is close by, and in the off season you'll mostly have them to yourself.
• The train keeps running. The LIRR station is about a mile away, and you can get here from Penn Station without a car in any month.

What's better in winter

We wouldn't have believed this before we lived on the bay.

• The sunsets are better. Cold air is clearer, and we think the best skies over the Great South Bay come between November and February. We have the photos, and we'll concede the point in July.
• You can park on Main Street on a Saturday.
• You can get a table. Places that are booked three weeks out in August will seat you in January.
• The bay is quiet: wind, water and birds. In summer there are jet skis in this view.
• It costs less. Off season rates are lower, and there's room in the calendar.

Who the off season suits

People coming home to Long Island for the holidays, when every spare room in the family is already taken. Clinicians on assignment at NYU Langone Hospital Suffolk, about a mile away. People between homes, and families putting relatives up nearby instead of on the couch. Anyone who wants a month on the water without paying August prices.

The house is heated and has a full kitchen, a washer and dryer, a desk and driveway parking. It's set up for a long stay.
